GOD NEVER SAID THAT
Week 3: More Than Happy
John 15:9–11
Opening Prayer
Good morning, church family. Take your Bible and turn with me to John chapter 15. As you're finding your place, let me remind you where we've been in this series. We've been looking at statements people repeat all the time that sound biblical but really aren't. During the first week we learned that God never said, "I'll never give you more than you can handle." In fact, there are many times in life when we receive more than we can handle so we'll learn to depend on Him instead of ourselves. Last week we looked at another familiar phrase, "Forgive and forget." We discovered that while God commands us to forgive, He Never Commands Us To Erase Our Memories. Instead, He calls us to Release Bitterness, Trust Him with Justice, and allow Him to Bring Healing to our Hearts.
This morning we come to another statement that has become very popular in our culture. It's repeated on television, in books, across social media, and sometimes even in churches. You've probably heard someone say, Well, I think "God just wants me to be happy." It sounds encouraging, and on the surface it even sounds spiritual. The problem is that many people use that statement to justify decisions that clearly contradict God's Word. They'll say, "I know I'm leaving my marriage, but God wants me to be happy," or, "I know this isn't what the Bible teaches, but God wants me to be happy." The phrase sounds right until we ask one very important question: Did God ever actually say that?
THE ANSWER IS NO.
Now don't misunderstand me. There is absolutely nothing wrong with HAPPINESS.

I enjoy being happy.

I enjoy sipping a cup of coffee before the day begins.

I enjoy spending time with my family, laughing with friends, and spending time with our grandchildren.
Those moments are gifts from God, and we should thank Him for every one of them. The problem ISN'T happiness itself. The Problem Begins When Happiness Becomes The Highest Goal Of Our Lives. Somewhere along the way our culture convinced us that … IF SOMETHING MAKES US HAPPY, IT MUST BE RIGHT, AND IF IT DOESN'T MAKE US HAPPY, WE SHOULD GET RID OF IT. That's a dangerous way to live because IT places our “FEELINGS” above “GOD'S TRUTH.”
The Bible teaches something much deeper than happiness. HAPPINESS DEPENDS UPON WHAT “HAPPENS” AROUND US.

When life is going our way, We're Happy.

When the doctor gives us a good report, We're Happy.

When our finances are stable, our relationships are healthy, and everything seems to be falling into place, Happiness Comes Rather Naturally.
But we've all lived long enough to know how quickly circumstances can change. ONE unexpected phone call, ONE doctor's appointment, ONE financial setback, or ONE heartbreaking loss CAN CAUSE HAPPINESS TO DISAPPEAR ALMOST OVERNIGHT.
At the same time, we've all known believers who walked through some of life's darkest valleys WITH A PEACE THAT COULDN'T BE EXPLAINED. They weren't pretending everything was fine. They weren't denying their pain. They simply possessed something MUCH DEEPER THAN HAPPINESS. THEY POSSESSED JOY. That's exactly what Jesus is talking about in John 15.
Think about when Jesus spoke these words. Within hours He would be BETRAYED by Judas, DENIED by Peter, ABANDONED by His DISCIPLES, ARRESTED, BEATEN, and NAILED to a CROSS.
IF ANYONE HAD REASON TO TALK ABOUT DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES, IT WAS JESUS. YET HE DIDN'T PROMISE HIS FOLLOWERS CONSTANT HAPPINESS.
Instead, He said in John 15, "I have told you these things so that My Joy May Be In You And That Your Joy May Be Complete." Jesus wasn't preparing His disciples FOR AN EASY LIFE. He was preparing them FOR A FAITHFUL LIFE, and He wanted them to understand that while happiness may come and go, HIS JOY CAN REMAIN THROUGH EVERY SEASON OF LIFE.
I. HAPPINESS IS TEMPORARY, BUT JOY IS ROOTED IN CHRIST
One of the greatest mistakes we make is treating happiness and joy as though they're the same thing. THEY ARE NOT.

Happiness is based on Circumstances,

while Joy Is Rooted In A Relationship With Jesus Christ.

Happiness Rises And Falls Depending On What's Happening Around Us.

Joy Remains Because Christ Remains. That's why Jesus didn't tell His disciples to remain in comfortable circumstances. He told them, "Remain in My love." The focus wasn't on CHANGING THEIR ENVIRONMENT; THE FOCUS WAS ON STAYING CLOSE TO HIM.

The writer of Hebrews reminds us that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." That's wonderful news because Almost Everything Else In Life Changes.

Our HEALTH changes.
-
Our FINANCES change.
-
Our JOBS change.
-
RELATIONSHIPS change.
-
Even CHURCHES experience seasons of change.
BUT JESUS CHRIST NEVER CHANGES. His LOVE Is Constant. His GRACE Is Constant. His FAITHFULNESS Is Constant. When our joy is anchored to Him instead of our circumstances, WE DISCOVER A STABILITY THAT THIS WORLD CANNOT EXPLAIN.
The Apostle Paul understood that truth perhaps better than anyone. He wrote the book of Philippians—(a letter filled with joy and encouragement)—NOT from a comfortable home- BUT FROM A ROMAN PRISON. His freedom had been taken away, his future was uncertain, and yet he repeatedly told believers to rejoice in the Lord. How is that possible? BECAUSE PAUL'S JOY WASN'T ANCHORED TO HIS SURROUNDINGS. IT WAS ANCHORED TO THE SAVIOR.
I read about an elderly Christian woman who had endured more heartache than most people experience in a lifetime. She survived the Great Depression, buried her husband, battled cancer, and experienced the loss of a child. Yet every Sunday she walked into church with a smile on her face. Someone finally asked her how she could still have such joy after everything she'd been through. Her answer was simple: "My happiness has come and gone many times over the years, but my joy has never left because my joy isn't based on what's happened to me. IT'S BASED ON THE ONE WHO HAS WALKED WITH ME THROUGH EVERY TRIAL."
Church, that's the difference Jesus wants us to understand. The world says that if we can change our circumstances, we'll finally be happy. Jesus says That If We'll Remain In Him, We'll Discover A Joy That Circumstances Cannot Steal. One is TEMPORARY. The other is ETERNAL. One depends UPON LIFE GOING OUR WAY. The other depends UPON WALKING WITH THE ONE WHO NEVER CHANGES.
That leads us naturally to the next question. If joy is found in Christ instead of circumstances, THEN WHY DOES GOD ALLOW DIFFICULT SEASONS IN OUR LIVES AT ALL? The answer is found in our second truth. God's greatest goal isn't simply to make us happy. HIS GREATEST GOAL IS TO MAKE US MORE LIKE JESUS. That’s the second truth. . .
II. GOD'S GOAL IS YOUR TRANSFORMATION, NOT JUST YOUR HAPPINESS
1 Peter 1:15–16] - 5 But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. 16 For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
As we move to our second truth, here's the question we have to answer. If God wants us to “Experience Joy”, why does He allow us to go through DIFFICULT TIMES? Why doesn't He simply remove every obstacle, answer every prayer exactly the way we ask it, AND MAKE LIFE EASIER?
The answer is found in understanding God's ultimate purpose for our lives. God's greatest goal IS “NOT” SIMPLY TO MAKE US HAPPY. His Greatest Goal Is TO MAKE US MORE LIKE HIS SON.
Peter writes, "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct." Notice what Peter DOESN'T say. He DOESN'T say, "Be Happy." He says, "BE HOLY." That word "holy" simply Means To Be Set Apart For God, To Become More Like Jesus Christ. From the moment we trust Christ as Savior, God begins the lifelong process of Shaping Us Into The Image Of His Son. Every experience we face—both the joyful ones and the painful ones—are part of that process of molding us TO BE MORE LIKE JESUS!
If we're honest, most of us pray for God to change our Circumstances. When life becomes difficult, we pray, "Lord, fix this problem. Remove this burden. Open this door. Heal this hurt." Those are natural prayers, and there's certainly nothing wrong with bringing those requests to the Lord. But have you noticed that sometimes God doesn't immediately change our circumstances? Instead, He begins CHANGING US. Rather than removing the trial, He gives us the STRENGTH to walk through it. Rather than taking away the burden, He teaches us TO LEAN ON HIS GRACE.
Looking back over the years, I can honestly say that I have learned more about God's faithfulness in the VALLEYS than I ever did on the MOUNTAINTOPS. There were SEASONS I never would have “CHOSEN” FOR MYSELF. There were DISAPPOINTMENTS I couldn't understand. DOORS that remained CLOSED when I desperately wanted them opened, and PRAYERS that God answered very differently than I expected. Those difficult seasons taught me lessons I could never have learned if life had always been easy. THEY TAUGHT ME THAT GOD'S GRACE TRULY IS SUFFICIENT AND THAT HIS PRESENCE IS FAR MORE VALUABLE THAN MY COMFORT.
James understood that truth when he wrote, "Count it all joy when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance." James isn't telling us to ENJOY SUFFERING. No one enjoys pain, loss, disappointment, or uncertainty. He's reminding us that God Is Accomplishing Something Through Those Experiences. Trials Have A Way Of Revealing What's Really In Our Hearts. They Expose our Fears, our Pride, and our Tendency to Depend on Ourselves. At the same time, they deepen our faith and remind us that Christ is enough.
Jesus used a beautiful illustration in John 15 when He talked about the vine and the branches. He said the Father prunes every branch that bears fruit so that it will become even more fruitful. That may seem surprising. We might expect God to prune the branches That Aren't Producing, but Jesus says He Prunes The Fruitful Ones. Why? Because He loves them too much to leave them where they are. Every gardener understands that pruning looks harsh in the moment, but it leads to healthier growth later. The gardener isn't hurting the plant; He's Preparing It To Become Everything It Was Created To Be.
God often works the same way in our lives. Sometimes He changes our Plans, Delays our Dreams, or allows us to walk through a season we'd Never Choose For Ourselves. In those moments it's easy to wonder if God has forgotten us, but often He's doing His greatest work BENEATH THE SURFACE. What feels like loss today may actually be preparation For A Greater Usefulness Tomorrow.
That's why Paul's words in Philippians 1:6 are so encouraging: "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." What a wonderful promise! God never starts a project He doesn't intend to finish. He's still working on YOU, and He's still working on ME. None of us have arrived, but by His grace we're not the people we used to be. Day by day, sometimes in ways we don't even recognize, God Is Shaping Us Into The Likeness Of Christ.
Perhaps the next time life doesn't unfold according to your plans, instead of immediately asking, "Lord, why is this HAPPENING to me?" try asking a different question: "Lord, what Do You Want To TEACH me?"
That brings us to one final truth. If God is using every season of life to shape us into the likeness of Christ, HOW DO WE HOLD ON TO OUR JOY WHEN LIFE BECOMES INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT? Jesus answers that question by reminding us that lasting joy is found in Trusting God Through Every Season Of Life.
III. GOD'S JOY IS FOUND IN TRUSTING HIM THROUGH EVERY SEASON
Psalm 23:4] - Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. NLT
As we come to our final truth this morning, let me ask you a simple question. What happens when life doesn't turn out the way you planned? What happens when the DIAGNOSIS isn't good? When the MARRIAGE struggles. When the JOB disappears, or when you LOSE someone you dearly love? It's one thing to talk about joy WHEN EVERYTHING IS GOING WELL. It's another thing TO EXPERIENCE THAT JOY WHEN LIFE HURTS.
The reality is that every one of us will walk through difficult seasons. The Christian life Is Not An Exemption From Pain; it's The Assurance That We Never Face Pain Alone.
That's why I love the words of David in Psalm 23. He writes, "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me." Notice what David DOESN'T SAY. He doesn't say Believers Never Enter Valleys. He doesn't say People Of Faith Never Experience Loss Or Disappointment. He says that even in the darkest valley, God is present. THE PROMISE ISN'T THE ABSENCE OF TROUBLE; THE PROMISE IS THE PRESENCE OF GOD!
When Jesus was walking with His disciples. Within hours He would be Betrayed By Judas, Denied By Peter, Abandoned By His Closest Friends, Falsely Accused, Beaten, and Nailed To A Cross. Yet in the middle of all that He said, "I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete." That tells me joy is not the result of Perfect Circumstances. Joy Is The Result Of Complete Confidence In The Father.
The writer of Hebrews explains it this way: "For the joy that was set before Him He endured the cross." Jesus looked beyond the suffering, to what His suffering would accomplish. He endured the cross because He knew GOD'S PURPOSE was greater than HIS PRESENT PAIN.
Most of us naturally focus on TODAY'S circumstances. God is focused on ETERNITY. We see one chapter of the story; God sees the entire book. We often ask, "Why is this happening?" while God is asking, "Will you trust Me even when you don't understand?"
The Mason Building a Cathedral
A traveler once stopped to watch three men working. He asked the first man, "What are you doing?"
The man replied, "I'm laying bricks."
He asked the second man the same question.
The man answered, "I'm building a wall."
Finally, he asked the third man.
The man smiled and said, "I'm building a cathedral."
All three men were doing the same work, BUT ONLY ONE COULD SEE THE FINISHED PICTURE.
Sometimes that's where we are in life. All we see are today's bricks—the Disappointments, the Setbacks, the Unanswered Prayers. But God isn't just laying bricks. HE'S BUILDING A CATHEDRAL. We see today's task; God sees tomorrow's masterpiece.
That's why Paul could confidently write in Romans 8:28, "We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to His purpose." Paul doesn't say all things are good. Disease isn't good. Grief isn't good. Heartbreak isn't good. But God is so great that He can take even the painful experiences of life and use them for our good and His glory. That's the promise. God Doesn't Waste Our Pain.
Perhaps that's where some of you are today. On the outside you're smiling, but inside you're carrying a burden no one else knows about. You're wondering how things will work out, praying for someone you love, or facing overwhelming decisions. If that's you, remember: the God who walked with David through the valley is walking with you today. He hasn't forgotten you, abandoned you, or stopped working.
Paul reminds us in Philippians 1:6 that "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Your story isn't finished yet. This may be a difficult chapter, but it isn't the final chapter. God is still writing, and because He's still writing, there is still hope.
CONCLUSION
As we've worked through this message, we've discovered that one of the most popular statements in our culture is also one of the most misleading. God Never Said, "I Just Want You To Be Happy." What He said is infinitely better. He calls us TO REMAIN IN HIM, to BECOME MORE LIKE HIS SON, and to EXPERIENCE A JOY THAT CIRCUMSTANCES CAN NEVER STEAL.
INVITATION
QUESTION - Where have you been looking for happiness? Has your joy become dependent upon your CIRCUMSTANCES instead of your SAVIOR?
Perhaps you've been asking God to Change Your Situation when He wants to Use That Very Situation To Change You. Today may be the day to simply come before Him and say, "Lord, I don't understand everything that's happening, but I trust You. Help me find my joy in You rather than in my circumstances."
And if you've never trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior, your greatest need isn't more happiness—it's forgiveness and a relationship with the One who died and rose again for you. Christ invites you to receive His grace, forgiveness, and the joy only He can give.
As we stand together and sing, if God has spoken to your heart, don't put Him off. Come as He leads.
Remember this one truth as you leave today: God Never Promised CONSTANT HAPPINESS, But He Has PROMISED HIS CONSTANT PRESENCE—and His presence will always be enough.
